Ex-Australian Specialist Response Group leader, Tim "Harry" Harrigan, has been running covert ops for almost a decade. A lone wolf, he's single-handedly taken down terrorists and national security threats, or so he thinks. He's been in the game far too long, and when he sees a familiar threat, he knows his time is up.
Asher Garin is a dangerous man. A man without loyalty, a man without a nationality, without a country, without a home. He's also a mercenary for hire to the highest bidder. His next job is a face he recognises, and after a tip-off, he learns he too is a marked man.
It's a different game now, and Harry and Asher have a better chance at surviving if they stick together. But it's not just the game or the rules that have changed. The stakes have too.
Because on their own, they had nothing to lose. Together, they do.

I finally picked this book up after hesitating for a while, some early reviews weren’t too encouraging. But with the third book in the series now released, I decided it was time. And honestly? I’m so glad I read it.
The Kite follows Harry and Asher, two thirty-something men working in the shadows of the world. Their job? Eliminating threats. Both live isolated, dangerous lives… until they’re forced into close quarters, relying on each other for survival.

There’s tension, danger, distrust — and yes, attraction. Lots of it.
Though marketed as an enemies-to-lovers, it didn’t exactly feel like that to me. It was more grumpy x sunshine, with Harry being the ultimate grump and Asher… well, he slowly (and adorably) shines through. You’ll see what I mean.
“No. Your first mistake was sending Asher to kill me. Not because you wanted me dead, not because you betrayed your country. But because by giving Asher to me, you gave me a reason to live. That was your first mistake.”
It’s true the middle part of the book dragged a bit, but overall it was a fun, action-packed ride. I laughed at their bickering, at their “two seconds away from killing each other” energy, and absolutely loved the chemistry they shared. When they’re together, it sparks.
But let me talk about Asher for a moment: he owned this book emotionally. His past broke my heart, and yes, I teared up more than once. I do wish we’d seen him more in action with his “babies” (he’s a sniper, after all), but still… he left a strong impression.
The book doesn’t alternate POVs (Harry takes the narrative lead), but that didn’t hurt the pacing or emotional depth at all.
And the revenge scene? So satisfying. It gave me major Breaking Bad vibes and I loved every second of it.
Definitely excited to dive into book two: The Bait. Bring it on, N.R. Walker!
Final Rating: 4 stars!
