A scientist should never cohabitate with her annoyingly hot nemesis—it leads to combustion.

Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn…

As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else’s food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she’s the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt’s house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side…but Helena was her mentor and Mara’s not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight.

The problem is, living with someone means getting to know them. And the more Mara finds out about Liam, the harder it is to loathe him…and the easier it is to love him.

I have to admit, I really enjoy Ali Hazelwood’s writing — I relate to many of her characters on a personal level. I have a degree in IT, I’m obsessed with cats, love American football, and a few other things that always seem to pop up in her stories. And I love that!

This was the third book I’ve read by Ali (after The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain), and the formula still works: I can’t stop reading, it feels almost compulsive.

Under One Roof

I really appreciated that this time, she stepped away from the whole “coworkers-to-lovers” setup and gave us a romance between professionals from totally different fields, with conflicting interests. That brought out some really interesting conversations between the characters, always respectful and grounded.

From the book blurb, I expected a much stronger enemies-to-lovers vibe, but their connection actually builds slowly through daily life, small habits, and the shared rhythms of living under one roof.

This story could’ve easily been a full-length novel, and I would’ve devoured every page. I truly enjoyed Mara and Liam as a couple, and I really hope Ali writes a continuation of their story.

It’s a cozy, easy read, nothing extraordinary, but definitely enjoyable.
